Mindful Trader Commentary For October 21, 2021

Hey Guys,

There haven't been any new trades in the main account or the extra options account yet today, but there were two new trades in the low-priced account. I grabbed shares of CF and H. One of the benefits of having that new low-priced account is that it opens up a bigger stock universe to us and in turn offers more trading opportunities. I don't personally mix trades between accounts, but you are welcome to get trading ideas from any of the three accounts and incorporate them into your own account as you see fit.

IBM had its earnings announcement after the market closed yesterday, and it caused the stock price to spike way downward. That one didn't go our way. The price gapped down below my stoploss (although since I use a "market" stop order as opposed to a stop limit order, my stoploss order still got filled, just at a lower price).

On the flip side, those MRK options hit their profit target yesterday and offered a glorious result. That was my largest options victory of the year. My total account balance went up 5.7% just from that one trade alone. I got a 329% return on the premium I paid for that option position. It's especially fun considering that the price of MRK dropped in the first day and didn't get off to a good start.

American Express reached its time limit, so I closed that position for a solid profit this morning. For some reason my trading platform was delayed on filling my order though. I had a market sell order set up before the market opened (like I always do for stock trades that reach their time limit), but it didn't actually fill until 3 minutes after the market opened. Luck bounced the wrong way for me, and I ended up losing some profit as a result of the delayed fill. Sometimes that's just the way it goes. I had the opposite thing happen to me earlier this year with a different position, where the delayed fill caused me to get more profit. The impact of those platform delays might kind of even out over time.

My NFLX options also just reached their profit target, which is good because I have some other options positions aren't looking too hot at the moment.

Today there are a number of options positions that are reaching their time limits. I'll be closing those near the end of the trading day today. I prefer not to own those going into expiration Friday.

If you have any questions or feedback, I'd love to hear from you.
