Mindful Trader Commentary For October 12, 2023

Hey Guys,

The market is around the same place as it was when I emailed yesterday. The S&P 500 is at 4,370 right now.

There is no new trading activity today. Sometimes there are periods like this where the trading activity is minimal. I've gone through it in live trading, and it also can be seen in back tests.

Sometimes I get a little antsy on days when there aren't any trades. It's a feeling like I should be doing something to try to make profits. For me, that feeling is probably derived from my childhood, where I somehow conditioned myself to always be trying to do more or be better.

But sometimes, particularly in the market, doing nothing can be a good thing. Would I really want to be taking trades if they didn't have a back-tested edge? Personally, I wouldn't.

Since I know I'm in lock step with the back tests, and the back tests have periods like this with no trades and yet still generated substantial returns, it helps me rest easy and accept that it's ok to have a week like this. Living through days with no trades is just as much a part of the trading experience as taking the trades themselves.

If you have any questions or feedback, I'd love to hear from you.
